IRS of second quarter

Top 10 English Dailies

The Times of India continues to be the largest read English daily of the country with a marginal growth in IRS Q2 2011 over Q1 of IRS 2011. The AIR data released for Q2 2011 show that TOI has added just 29,000 readers to take its AIR to 74.71 lakh compared with 74.42 lakh in Q1 2011. The No.1 English daily had added 18,000 readers in the first quarter.

The second largest read English daily, Hindustan Times, has added 45,000 readers in Q2 2011. The paper had added 1 lakh readers in the first quarter of IRS 2011 and 75,000 readers in the last quarter of IRS 2010. HT’s AIR now stands at 37.37 lakh compared with 36.92 lakh in Q1 2011. HT had added 64,000 readers in the third quarter of IRS 2010 also.

The country’s No.3 English daily, The Hindu, has lost a few readers for the second quarter in a row. The daily lost 18,000 readers in Q2 2011 while it had lost 20,000 readers in the first quarter of IRS 2011. The Hindu has recorded an AIR of 20.77 lakh compared with 20.95 lakh in the previous quarter.

The Telegraph continues at No. 4 position with a marginal growth over the last quarter. Its AIR now stands at 12.09 lakh compared with 12.03 lakh in the previous quarter. It had lost 35,000 readers in the first quarter of IRS 2011 while it added 41,000 readers in IRS Q4 2010, lost 14,000 readers in Q3 and added 7,000 readers in Q2 of IRS 2010.

At No.5 is Deccan Chronicle which has added 53,000 readers in Q2 of IRS 2011. The daily had lost 38,000 readers in Q1 2011. Its current AIR stands at 10.88 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 compared with 10.35 lakh in the last survey. The daily had lost 5,000 readers in IRS Q4 2010, lost 74,000 readers in Q3 but added 28,000 readers in Q2 of IRS 2010.

DNA continues to be the No.6 daily. It added just 2,000 readers in this quarter. Its current AIR stands at 8.24 lakh compared with 8.22 lakh in IRS Q1 2011. DNA had dislodged The Economic Times from No.6 position by adding 72,000 readers in the first quarter of IRS 2011. In IRS Q2 2010, the daily had added 1.19 lakh readers to become the No.6 English daily of the country but was pushed to No.7 due to consecutive losses in Q3 and Q4 of IRS 2011.

Business daily The Economic Times has climbed one slot to No. 7 by adding 16,000 readers in the second quarter of IRS2011. The paper was pushed to No.8 position by DNA and Mumbai Mirror in IRS Q1 2011. ET has an AIR of 7.85 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 compared with 7.69 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

Mumbai Mirror has not been able to maintain its growth in Q2 2011. The daily has lost 22,000 readers in the quarter after adding 69,000 readers in the first quarter of IRS 2011. Its current AIR stands at 7.58 lakh compared with 7.80 lakh in the last quarter. The daily had lost 45,000 readers in IRS Q4 2010 and 30,000 readers in IRS Q3 2010.

Despite a marginal loss of just 2,000 readers, The Tribune continues to be the 9th most read English daily. Its current AIR stands at 5.67 lakh compared with 5.69 lakh in Q1 2011.

Remaining at 10th spot, The New Indian Express has shown some growth adding 9,000 readers in Q2 2011. The daily has recorded an AIR of 5.59 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 compared with 5.5 lakh in the previous quarter.

Top 10 Hindi Dailies

Nation’s largest reader Hindi daily ‘Dainik Jagran’ has strengthened its position by adding 4.83 lakh readers in the 2nd quarter of IRS 2011. Its current AIR in IRS Q2 2011 stands at 1,63,93,000 as compared to 1,59,10,000 in the previous quarter. The daily had lost 1% readers in IRS Q1 2011 while it had added 1,16,000 readers in IRS Q4 2010 and 25,000 readers in IRS Q3 2010. The daily had lost 4 lakh readers in IRS Q2 2010. Jagran had an AIR of 1,63,13,000 in IRS Q1 2010.

At second spot, ‘Dainik Bhaskar’ has also added 1,58,000 readers in the second quarter of IRS 2011. Its AIR now stands at 1,41,74,000 as compared to 1,40,16,000 in IRS Q1 2011. Bhaskar had added 25,000 readers to its AIR in IRS Q1 2011 and 5,04,000 readers in Q4 2010. Dainik Bhasker Group’s flagship publication had maintained the status quo in Q3 while it added 4.5 lakh readers in Q2 of IRS 2010.

Hindi daily ‘Hindustan’ is continuously strengthening its position as No.3 newspaper of the country on quarter on quarter basis, though the growth rate is at constant decline. Hindustan has added 1.75 lakh readers in IRS Q2 2011 while it had added 3.58 lakh readers in IRS Q1 2011 and 6.13 lakh readers in the last quarter of IRS 2010. The Hindi daily from Hindustan Media Ventures had added 6.96 lakh readers in IRS Q3 2010, 2 lakh in Q2 2010 and 5.78 lakh readers in IRS Q1 2010. Hindustan’s current AIR stands at 1,19,85,000 as compared to 1,18,10,000 in the previous quarter.

The fourth largest Hindi daily of the country ‘Amar Ujala’ is also on the growth path from past few quarters of IRS. The daily has added 1.44 lakh readers in IRS Q2 2011 to take its AIR at 88.91 lakh as compared to 87.47 lakh readers in IRS Q1 2011. The daily had added 1.07 lakh readers in IRS Q1 2011 while it had added 57,000 readers in the fourth quarter of IRS 2010.

Hindi daily ‘Rajasthan Patrika’ has lost its readers for the third consecutive quarters according to the AIR data released for IRS Q2 2011. The daily has lost 92,000 readers in this quarter while it had lost 51,000 readers in the Q4 of IRS 2010. Rajasthan Patrika had added 3.17 lakh readers in the third quarter of 2010 and 2.15 lakh readers in IRS Q2 2010. Its current AIR stands at 69.41 lakh as compared to 70.33 in IRS Q1, 2011.

India’s 6th largest read Hindi daily ‘Punjab Kesri’ too has registered decline in the second consecutive quarter. By losing 65,000 readers, its current AIR stands at 34.14 lakh as compared to 34.79 lakh in the previous quarter. The daily had lost 80,000 readers in the first quarter of IRS 2011, added 60,000 readers in IRS Q4 2010, lost 62,000 readers in IRS Q3 2010. Punjab Kesri had added 35,000 readers in IRS Q2 2010 and 1 lakh readers in the first quarter.

From last 3 quarters, the No.7 Hindi daily ‘Navbharat Times’ is on growth path. The daily has added 61,000 readers in its AIR in IRS Q2 2011. Its AIR now stands at 26,50,000 as compared to 25,89,000 in IRS Q1 2011. NBT had added 10,000 readers in IRS Q1 2011 and 47,000 readers in Q4 2010.

According to the average issue readership in second quarter of IRS 2011, Jharkhand’s leading Hindi daily ‘Prabhat Khabar’ has strengthened its position as 8th largest read daily in the country. After adding 2,14,000 readers in IRS Q4 2010 and 1,33,000 readers in Q1 2011, Prabhat Khabar has added 81,000 readers in Q2 to take its AIR to 18,93,000 as compared to 18,12,000 in the previous quarter. The daily had acquired the 8th spot in IRS Q4 2010.

After a consistent growth, ‘Nai Dunia’ has stopped a bit in this quarter and registered a slight decline. Nai Dunia has registered AIR of 17.14 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 17.62 lakh in previous quarter.

At No.10 is “Hari Bhoomi” with an AIR of 14,37,000 in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 14,37,000 in the previous quarter.

Top 10 English Magazines

India Today has added 74,000 readers in the second quarter of Indian Readership Survey (IRS) data released for the 2011. The magazine had lost 7.7% readers in last one year. The current AIR of India Today stands at 17.24 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 16.50 lakh in the previous quarter.

At 2nd spot, ‘Readers Digest’ has made a comeback after remaining at No.3 for 2 quarters. Readers Digest was replaced from No.2 position by ‘General Knowledge Today’ in IRS Q4 2010. By adding 28,000 readers in IRS Q2 2011, RD has recorded an AIR of 9.98 lakh in as compared to 9.6 lakh in the previous quarter. The educational magazine had an AIR of 9.74 lakh in IRS Q4 2010 and 12.7 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

Loss of 25,000 readers in this quarter has pushed ‘General Knowledge Today’ to No.3 position. The magazine has recorded an AIR of 9.77 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 10.02 lakh in the previous quarter. It had average issue readership of 10 lakh in IRS Q4 2010 and 9.99 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

Another educational English monthly magazine ‘Competition Success Review’ has lost a 30,000 readers this quarter. CSR has recorded an AIR of 6.54 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 6.84 lakh in IRS Q1 2011, 7.04 lakh in IRS Q4 2010 and 6.86 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

English weekly magazine ‘Outlook’ has added 18,000 readers this quarter to take its AIR at 4.56 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 4.38 lakh in the previous quarter. The magazine had lost 29,000 readers in Q1 2011.

The magazine that made an entry into top 10 list in last round of IRS now has acquired 6th spot in the country. The new No.6 magazine is ‘The Week’ which has grown by more than 22% in one quarter. Its current AIR stands at 3.96 lakh as compared to 3.25 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

Bollywood’s fortnightly magazine ‘Filmfare’ has again lost in this quarter. It has an AIR of 3.66 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 3.82 lakh in the previous quarter.
Another magazine for B-town ‘Stardust’ has also seen decline by losing 10,000 readers in the current survey. The No.7 English magazine of the country has recorded AIR of 3.42 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 3.52 lakh in IRS Q1 2011, 3.67 lakh in IRS Q4 2010 and 3.7 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

‘Femina’ has added a few readers in this quarter to take its current AIR at 3.39 lakh as compared to 3.37 lakh in IRS Q1 2011. It had an AIR of 3.28 lakh in IRS Q4 2010 and 3.17 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. The magazine holds 9th spot.

The new member in top 10 list is Business Today which has added 24,000 readers in this quarter to take its AIR at 3.33 lakh in Q2 2011 as compared to 3.09 Q1 2011.

Top 10 Hindi Magazines

Educational Hindi Magazine Pratiyogita Darpan has strengthened its position further as No.1 by maintaining its growth in this quarter. Pratiyogita has added 1.27 lakh readers over in IRS Q2 2011. The magazine has recorded an AIR of 21.54 lakh as compare to 20.27 lakh in the previous quarter. The magazine had an AIR of 17.42 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

The No.2 Hindi magazine of the country Saras Salil has recovered its losses upto some extent but could not regain its top position. The magazine has added 94,000 readers and taken its AIR at 20.39 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 19.45 lakh in the previous quarter. Saras Salil had 22.09 lakh readers in IRS Q1 2010.

There has been big change in pecking order starting at No.3 which has been acquired by Cricket Samrat which was at No.7 position in last quarter. This position was held by India Today till the previous quarter which has been pushed down to No.5 position now. The cricket magazine which has lost more than 6% readers in Q1 2011, has now added more than 23% readers in the second quarter of IRS 2011. It has recorded an AIR of 12.13 lakh in Q2 2011 as compared to 9.84 lakh in the previous quarter and 11.94 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

Meri Saheli is holding the 4th spot with by adding 74,000 readers in this quarter to take its AIR at 11.74 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 11 lakh in the previous quarter and 12.67 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

The new No.5 is India Today which has lost 2 positions despite adding some readers. Its current AIR now stands at 11.44 lakh as compared to 11.37 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 and 13.11 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

At No.6 and N0.7 are women’s magazines Grehlakshmi & Grih Shobha with AIR of 10.10 lakh and 10.08 lakh respectively in IRS Q2 2011.

Champak has strengthened its position at No.8 by adding 30,000 readers in the current survey. Kids’ favourite fortnightly magazine has recorded and AIR of 8.73 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 8.43 lakh in the previous quarter.

At 9th spot, Vanitha has taken an edge over Nirogdham with a difference of just 1000 readers. Both the magazines have 7.64 lakh and 7.63 lakh readers respectively in IRS Q2 2011.
